School Days

Here are some pictures I took over the past couple of weeks regarding school. This first one is on our lesson of Spartacus. They made 'Slave Signs' as if they were going to a slave auction, stating some things they're good at. Booty Shaker didn't want to get in the picture, but he made one too. They're more than eager looking little slaves, wouldn't you say?

Attempting to play Scrabble (thanks Amie). She didn't much care for this game, but I'll ring her in (it's my favorite).

The boys playing Sequence for kids while we attempted Scrabble.

We made mosaics in history this past week. They each made one of their initials. I see that our homeschool group is going to be making mosaics for art in Feb. I may sign us up.

I've been meaning to take pictures of what we do throughout a day but haven't gotten around to it (I forget in the morning). Hopefully since I have my batteries charging on the counter I'll remember tomorrow. We have been cruising along with schoolwork. Junior Squirrel finished his Science book so we'll move on to something else (I have some good science readers I think we'll read and maybe do some projects). We only have 2 weeks left in our history! It will be nice to finish it. I can't believe we're almost done with it!!!

Growing Grass

Remember these funny face planters the children made back in October? They planted grass seeds...

Here they are over a month later, before their 'hair cut'!

We had a great field trip to the fire station. It is a new fire station, I guess (I wouldn't know since the whole town is so 'new' to me). It is beautiful and the firemen did an awesome job in describing so many aspects to the children. We were able to sit in an ambulance, walk through a fire truck and learn about each of these. We saw the Jaws of Life. We saw their kitchen (3 stainless steel refrigerators), their living area, library and sleeping area. For some reason Booty Shaker was nervous about it all, until the very end! I was finally able to get pictures with him! I had to walk through the fire truck in order for him to do so! I was the only adult to do it but it was fun (and I was carrying the baby on me, what a site it must have been)! We're going to make the fireman a wonderful thank you card!!!

Creativity

Last week in history we talked about Jerusalem's walls being rebuilt. Junior Squirrel made a wonderful replica but either he or one of his siblings tore it apart. So, he redid this Jerusalem. I know he can do better and I'm going to encourage him to try it again!

Then Chatterbox got in on the action and did an awesome job! So much detail! Flat roofs on the houses. The people on the right are in the temple. To the left is the 'Most Holy Place'. Then there's the wall (and a black ladder). I love how they use their imaginations with Lego's! They do such a wonderful job. Zach often teases how I can't build with Lego's. I can try but my stuff would never turn out as well as all of theirs! They get the creative genes from dad's side of the family!

School week in pictures

These pictures didn't turn out but I wanted to put them on for my own record. We dyed carnations and the orange took right away. It took some more food coloring for the blue to work. It was neat. You could even see some of the color on the stems. Good project when you're learning about plants!

Here's our sweet potato. You can see a couple of roots that grew from it as we had it sit in water in the sun. Another fun project to see, learning about roots. In history yesterday we read about Hippocrates. We read how he's called 'the father of medicine'. We got to make up our own concoctions of various herbs. They chose honey, cinnamon, basil leaves, garlic salt and a few other items. They could taste them if they wanted, which they all did. I didn't try it- the smell was awful enough. Look at how nasty it looked:
Before they actually tried it...mixing it up

Junior Squirrel did NOT like it at all! Just look at the faces he's making! I can't believe I caught them! I could not stop laughing! Even afterward as he sat by me his breath just rotted!
Mom, this stuff is gross!

With water, glaring at his 'nasty medicine'!

Then on the flipside you have the boy who is so picky...who is currently sitting at the table playing with his food, Booty Shaker. He wanted to eat it all! Yuck, yuck!Chatterbox says she kinda liked it. Here she is trying it:And that is some of the school fun we had this week. I must say that little projects certainly help us all to enjoy school and have fun with it!

From Royalty to Greek Actors

*****Stupid, stupid blogger...when I viewed my post earlier all of the pictures appeared...no idea why they aren't now...I will fix it...I hate when that happens!

Here is Queen Sweet Pea! The kids made crowns today (we learned about Queen Esther this week) and wanted to share with the baby!

Booty Shaker wouldn't get in the picture...guess he didn't feel royal enough!

This is me today...no make-up and just 'bumming it' at home...definitely shouldn't be hanging out with royalty!

In history we talked about 'The Golden Age of Athens'. No, these aren't Halloween masks they are Greek theater masks the kids had a lot of fun making. They think they'll scare daddy when he comes home!

Not too difficult to tell who's who!I just realized that this actor looks like a watermelon!

We haven't done our timeline yet, but after that I think our school week is done. I believe this was week 6 of school. Hard to believe that much time has gone by! Broccoli cheese soup is on the dinner menu...perfect what with the chilly weather we're having!

Darius 1

We talked about Darius 1st in history yesterday and discovered that he may have 'invented' the first type of postal service. So the kids became mailmen (and ladies). They had fun with it. As you see in the bottom picture the Sweet Pea just slept. She turned 6 weeks yesterday. Time is going way too fast and I just want to hold on to her longer. She no longer has the newborn cry even...so sad!

More History

This is Cyrus the Great! We had fun playing 'dress up' in history on Friday. I was surprised Junior Squirrel allowed makeup to go on! We had fun with it though!

We'd also talked about Belshazzar and the writing on the wall. So we 'wrote' on our wall and have it hanging in our dining room.

She dressed up as well. Recognize the dress Jodie??? I guess we could call her a queen or princess. She was excited to be able to put on one of mom's fancy dresses! And she wore her makeup all day long!

Not sure what kind of smile this is but I still think she looks beautiful...and too grown up!
