You Get What You Pay For...

Isn't that saying true? About 9 months ago I switched phone company's. The company I had was increasing their rates to at least $70 a month. In addition I had my $40 cell phone bill. So I thought I'd look into a cheaper company. I started looking into Vonage, but go figure they don't have service in our area. So I searched out other VoIP companies and came across Packet 8. It looked great and was cheap. So, I signed up and was happy to not have to pay so much money! Well, I have not been happy with the service of my phone since day 1. I remember calling about it one time and being told it was probably our router. I have static on my phone in certain areas of the house, and with a regular phone company that didn't happen. Most of the time I'm on the phone there is this ticking noise in the background. Sounds like a helicopter. Sometimes when somebody calls my phone doesn't even ring. Lately what has been happening a LOT is that I will call out and it won't ring on my end. It rings on their end and nobody is there (because I hear nothing). What if it were an emergency and I were trying to get help and that happened? Also, the past 3-4 days when I talk on the phone I keep hearing a beeping noise like somebody is pressing a button on their phone. When I finally asked if they were they had no idea what I was talking about. I'm sure there have been other issues also. I am so fed up with the poor service I am getting, even though I'm paying next to nothing. Zach thinks we're fine with just a cell phone. I really like having a home phone also. Or I'm thinking maybe just getting a cell phone for Zach too. I don't know... What do you all think? What works for you? I know Zach is relieved because he has been asking me for MONTHS to get rid of this company! So, sorry Packet 8, but you will be losing a customer soon. I just can't put up with the problems anymore...

And that's my gripe for the week...

I would be happy just going to a cell phone, but I have poor reception here. I worry about 911 service if I had someone at my house babysitting. I was in the hospital having my last baby, and one of my twins ate a plastic easter egg and came to the same hospital. What if we did not have a home phone for her to call 911? That is the biggest reason I haven't switched.

BTW I tag you!

We have had Vonage for about a year and a half with no problems. Too bad they are not available everywhere. I'm still not sure how we got service since we have friends here who were told they couldn't get it.

It's funny that you blogged this. We just called today and got rid of our land line and only have the cell phones. We've had the two cells for just over a year now and feel that they are more than adequate. That's my piece for the day.

We had just cell phones for the last 4 yrs!!! We just recently got a landline, but only because it was a package deal with our cable and internet! We barely use it at all! lol We are so use to just having our cell phones on us all the time, and just charging them at night. We all have them, and it's free for us to call each other so it's not like we are using mins. or anything. We have a family plan too, for all 3 phones (Girly's too) and it's not bad at all!

Oh and I wanted to say, if Hubs and I ever leave the house, or have the kids with a sitter, we just leave 1 of our phones with them so they have a way to contact us if there was an emergency. Plus Girly's got hers now, so that's not even a problem. But yeah, I wanted to add that in! lol

We did that when we lived in the UP with a similar sounding company and by the time we moved I was trying to stop our service and pay our final bill only to be routed some foreigner who I couldn't even understand! I had called back several times and after several failed attempts finally - again, after several attempts - was able to pay my bill online. I figured they couldn't charge us anymore after we canceled our local phone service anyway. I don't remember what company it was but I would never recommend them to anyone!

We have had Vonage for quite a while too. There has been no problems. However when my SIL signed up she had bad customer service issues (but that was a LONG time ago). However if you can't get it, it doesn't matter. I would deffinately dump that company and just stick with cellphones. Maybe you can get one of those cheap pre-paid ones for the house for emergencies. I had a track phone and it seemed to work everywhere.....(I even still have that phone somewhere let me know if you want it)

For a long time we just had a cheap land line (local only) and then bought a Sam's Club phone card (2.9 cents a min) for long distance calls. You could do that for the times when your cell service is not free (unless you have unlimited hours). I like having a land line as well although I could see ditching it all together!

Good Luck!

P.S. Don't kill me but I tagged you for a Homeschool Resource Meme should you choose to accept the mission!
